Special education

At Fairview Heights State School we are committed to achieving excellence by enhancing educational opportunities for all students. We create an environment where:

  • all students can learn
  • all students feel a strong sense of belonging
  • all students learn to interact respectfully with others
  • all students learn to understand and appreciate diversity.

Our target group of students are students from prep to year 6 identified under the Education Adjustment Program who have a diagnosed disability in the following areas:

  • Intellectual Impairment
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • Speech Language Impairment
  • Physical Impairment
  • Vision Impairment
  • Hearing Impairment

Adjustments are made to enable students to access the curriculum, achieve curriculum outcomes and participate in school life.

Our programs for students with a disability are tailored to individual student needs. We have some students in small classes for learning and some students who are supported in year level classes. Some students have a combination of being in a large class and being in a small class. Our special education teachers and teacher aides in collaboration with all staff members in the school work very hard to ensure that we provide the best possible program for students.

Students have access to Denise Kable programs when required as well as Shooting for the Stars. These programs add to the learning opportunities available on campus.

When required students can receive support from an Education Queensland Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech Language Pathologist, Guidance officer as well as Advisory visiting teachers.

Additional supervision is provided during the school day and at lunch times to support students social and emotional development as well as their safety.
