Prep is the first year of school and provides the foundation for your child’s education.
From 2017, it is compulsory for Queensland children to undertake Prep prior to Year 1. Prep is a full-time program in primary schools. Children attend Monday to Friday from 8.45am to 3.00pm.
Children must be 5 by 30 June in the year they enrol. To determine when your child can commence their prep year, view the prep enrolments table.
Preparing your child for prep
As a parent, you play a vital role in your child’s education. There are many things you can do to make your child’s first day and time at school more enjoyable.
Before prep
Kindergarten services can help your child get ready for prep. You can enrol them in a Kindergarten Program in the year before they start prep.
Search for an early childhood education and care service near you.
If your child is already enrolled, talk to your service provider about how they can help with the transition to school.
Ask about transition statements—a summary of each child’s learning and development during the kindergarten year.
Indigenous pre-prep programs
Foundations for Success a pre-prep program helps prepare Indigenous children in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities for school.
